BIOGRAPHY

Kanika Sago/Kanika Zahra Sago was born and raised in Chicago (Illinois).  She thanks her early arts experiences and training in dance, music, modeling and fashion to:

YMCA of Metro Chicago, Ms. Nilaja Niono-African American Arts Alliance, Chicago Public Schools (Edward W. Beasley Gifted Center and Whitney M. Young Magnet High School), Cleo Johnson School of Modeling and Columbia College Chicago.

Kanika Sago also has a daughter named Renata Sago.  She was born and raised in Chicago (Illinois).  Renata is a graduate of McDade Classical School (Chicago), Morgan Park High School (Chicago) and Brown University.

EARLY YEARS

At the age of 5 and in 1978, Kanika had an interest in swimming and her mother placed her in Swimming Programs at a local park in Chicago.  With many years of training and by the age of 10, her swimming allowed her to finally compete with youth at other parks in Chicago and also earned her a few medals.  Kanika also worked with this training as a grade school student at Beasley Academic Center, where they also had Swimming as a component of their Physical Education Program.  She graduated from Beasley in 1987 and went on to attend Whitney M. Young Magnet High School--She was on Whitney Young's Girls Swim Team during her Sophomore year at the school.

During the time that Kanika was enrolled in Swimming Programs and at the age of 6, Kanika's mother also felt that she could also sustain the discipline of dance.  Kanika began taking ballet at the YMCA and did well for 2 years.  She also began taking an African dance class through an After School Program that was offered at the independent African-arts structured grade school that she attended from the age of 5 to 8 years old (before she attended Beasley Academic Center).

The training was classical African dance instruction and was given by a teacher affiliated with early-day Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago.
